 "AUTOCROSS"

By Dick Knight

July 17, 2008   - The first annual autocross is in the books.  The day started out quite well with some cloud cover, which was good for the workers and the participants.  You never know what to expect when you hold a new event, but I have to say the response from the participants has been overwhelming fantastic!  I want to thank everyone that has called or talked with me about what a great time they had.  I have to say the event did what I wanted it to do, and that was to get the car show individuals out and drive those gorgeous cars on the track.     We had a great event with no accidents, and no broken motors, and saw some cars really perform like they should.  The Saleens, Shelbys, and other new cars did have to perform at a higher level then expected because of a white '66 Mustang coupe that was one of the fastest cars on the track.  Loved seeing the old iron give those new guys a run for their money!   I hope to do another autocross in the fall and maybe next spring if there are enough people that want to participate?  Please let me know at a club meeting, via email, or give me call.   I want to also give a big THANK YOU to the Boeing Autocross Club for their support with equipment, and to the many volunteers that helped all day long.   Thanks again!

"PONY TRAILS"

July 18, 2008   - The 2008 Pony Trails, "A Trail to Remember" began with nearly 200 cars and support vehicles leaving Bellevue Community College in the early morning hours of Friday July 18th.  From there, the caravan proceeded along eastbound I-90 over Snoqualmie Pass, then over Blewitt Pass, until the caravan made its way into scenic Leavenworth.  The entire trip was 123 miles, and Pony Trails participants were treated to breathtaking scenery and spectacular views along the route.  Upon arriving in Leavenworth, participants also had a panoramic picture taken of themselves and their fiery steeds at Leavenworth's John Osbourne Elementary school.  Special Thanks to Jay Atkinson and Mike Godwin for chairing such a fun and memorable event!  What a treat to see Wild Mustangs in their Natural Habitat!

"JUDGED SHOW"

By Rob Ogden

July 19, 2008   - The Mustangs Northwest judged show was on Saturday, July 19.  There were approximately 70 Mustangs registered for this event, including 23 Concours entries.  Among the highlights of the judged show was the Learman family's maroon, restomod 1965 fastback, which was finished in Dick Knight's shop just a few weeks ago.  It was a long road getting the car finished in time for Roundup, and the car was finally ready.  Another standout Mustang was Ken Young's wild 1966 coupe, with drag slicks, full cage, stretched front end, and a monster V-8 engine.  A keen eye would also have spotted the vintage Fender "Mustang" guitar inside the car.  On Sunday, Ken displayed his awesome Mustang-themed motorcycle, with a running horse burned into the leather seat and a horse mural on the gas tank.  The workmanship on these vehicles was outstanding.  Also, congratulations goes to Mike Koehnen for his slightly modified 1989 Mustang being selecte d as the cover car for the August 2008 issue of Mustang Enthusiast magazine.  Getting your car in a national magazine is rare enough, but being chosen to grace the cover is as prestigious as it gets.

 Mustang Car & Bike

The Mustangs Northwest judge committee would like to thank everyone who entered the judged show, especially those who entered for the first time.  There's no better way to learn about the judging process.  The intention of the judging sheets is to help improve your Mustang for the next judged show.  In the recent past, we have seen Concours cars move from a Bronze trophy to a Silver, and eventually to Gold.  Save your judging sheets and use them as a guide, since they outline exactly what the judges saw in your Mustang.  And don't forget to bring a fire extinguisher to every judged show.  It does not need to be mounted in the car, it just needs to be there.  (There is a one point deduction for no fire extinguisher.)

The MNW judging committee would also like to remind everyone that starting with the Spring-Into-Summer judged show in 2009, we will be using full and correct Mustang Club of America judging rules and classes in order to prepare for the MCA Grand National Mustang show in the summer of 2010.  Some of the classes to which we have become accustomed will be changing, while others will not.  In the coming months, the judge committee will be working to educate everyone about these changes.  We also plan to continue with the study halls that we started this past Spring to help people become certified in the judging class of their choice.  A few of our members are even working on obtaining Gold Cards.

The MNW judge committee would like to thank everyone who helped out in our judged show.  Thanks to the organizers, Head Judge Bill Johnson, the technical inspection crew, tally personnel, and especially all of the volunteer judges.  Without you, there would be no judged show.  We look forward to seeing each of you at next year's judged Mustang shows.

"ROUNDUP BANQUET"

July 19, 2008   - This year's traditional Saturday-night Banquet took place at Woodinville's Red Hook Brewery.  Mustangs NW knows how to throw a party, and the Roundup Banquet was no exception.  Guests were treated to a dinner of Lamb, Roasted Pork loin, baked potato bar, and an incredible dessert spread of various cakes and pastries.  Some famous entertainers came out of retirement to wow the crowd with singing and dancing, and many attendees even joined Steve Saleen in a Conga line!  Several donated items were also auctioned off throughout the evening, with 100% of the proceeds going towards the various charities that Mustangs NW so enthusiastically supports throughout the year.  Thanks to Banquet Chair Ron Foster, a great time was had by all!

"PEOPLE'S CHOICE SHOW"

July 20, 2008   - From Racecars and Convertibles to Modifieds and Classics, the 2008 Roundup People's Choice Show was a real treat for the eyes!  Throughout the day, spectators could hob-nob with Steve Saleen at the autograph-signing tent, be caught on camera as Lance Lambert taped a future episode of the Vintage Vehicle car show, and peruse acres of gorgeous cars.  A sea of smiling, yellow-clad volunteers orchestrated every minute detail and made sure that the event came off without a hitch.  Special Thanks to Mike Godwin, the 2008 Roundup Chairman, and the 200+ volunteers who made this year's Roundup possible!
