Dave Penwell's 1965 Convertible "White 65"
My white 1965 convertible with red interior has been a member of Mustangs Northwest for 29 years - that is 18 years longer than I have been in the club! I am the fourth Mustangs Northwest club member to own this car. The first club member to own this car was Bob Petrie. Bob was president of this club in 1982, and was the
Bob sold the car to former club member Steve Mallos in December 1986. Under Steve's ownership a new top was installed, and the car was repainted in 1989. Steve then sold the car to another club member, Chris Cardwell, in June of 1994. Under Chris's ownership, the engine compartment was detailed again, and a new interior and carpet was installed. Chris also replaced the wire wheel covers with styled steel wheels. Chris sold the car to me in 2000 when I saw it for sale in the pony corral at Roundup. Needless to say, it was the most expensive Roundup I ever attended! This was always one of my favorite cars in the club, and when I had the opportunity to buy it, I was ecstatic. Due to the great care made by the previous owners, the car was in outstanding condition when I bought it. The work done under my ownership has been minor. A few parts have been replaced or rebuilt. The front suspension was rebuilt when the battery overcharged on Pony Trails in 2005, and got acid everywhere.
I am thinking about having the car repainted once again. Basically I have always thought of myself as the caretaker of the car rather than the owner.
Some interesting facts about the car.
- MCA Concours Driven Gold Winner - One of 5,338 "65" convertibles produced with pony interior - One of the last "65" convertibles produced July 28, 1965 - Car was delivered to the Seattle District in 1965 from San Jose Factory - Believed to always have been in the Seattle Area - License Plate "White65" - Fuel Pump gave out during 1981 Seafair Torchlight Parade. Car had to be pushed down parade route and made the front page of the Seattle Times the next day. - Carried former US Senator Henry (Scoop) Jackson and his wife in Lake City parade 1981 - In Mustang Monthly June 1990 - In 1993 Tom Corcoran book Titled "Mustang 64.5 - 68" on page 28 and back cover.
If the day ever comes, and I sell the car I hope a club member buys it, and keeps it where it belongs - MUSTANGS NORTHWEST!
