Shannon Wolk's 2008 GT Coupe "Burgundy Express II"
In January 1985, I bought a 1968 Fastback. It was just a shell - no engine, trans, front sheet metal, interior, etc....It was a really lovely pile, but in my mind I could see the finished product. Flash forward to early summer '91 - my primered, daily-driven (still no interior, just a driver’s seat) beauty had a header leak. While I was at a meeting, my husband Jamie told me he would fix the leak for me....but when I got home, my car was disassembled all over the garage! Well after a month of non-stop sanding and prepping, my baby finally looked just like I dreamed it would, and thus was born my original “Burgundy Express” and my enduring love for burgundy Fastbacks with black interiors.
Unfortunately a year and a half later, my car kissed a Hudson Hornet pickup and lost. I have wanted a replacement ever since, and since I couldn't afford another ‘68, I decided to get an ‘08 since there were so many things about them that reminded me of the older cars. In the first week I must have seen five other cars that looked just like mine...that will never do! I knew I needed to do something to make mine stand out.
For years, I had been rolling around the idea of a burgundy Hertz car, so that's what I decided I was going to do to mine. I had Bellevue Auto Rebuild paint the Aztec Gold stripes on, and cut the hole in the hood for the shaker (I am way too chicken to cut on my brand new car). Luckily, I came into some money right about this time, so I was able to indulge myself and build the car of my dreams. Since my ‘08 is like the child of my ‘68 to me, I decided to name it "Burgundy Express II". Other than the Ford racing suspension, my car is pretty much done.
